Haydn in the monasteries

In 18th-century Austrian monasteries, the local centers of vocal and instrumental music already performed Joseph Haydn’s works, even before the composer became widely known. The young musician’s scores were copied by the monks and shared among them. Today, several Austrian monastic music collections still hold manuscript copies of Haydn’s early works.
