Felix Mendelssohn excelled not only in music but also in painting
Felix Mendelssohn not only composed remarkable music but was also a passionate draughtsman and painter. During his travels, he captured many of the world’s wonders: the Thomasschule in Leipzig, the Duomo in Florence, the Amalfi Coast in southern Italy, and even the cliffs of the Hebrides in Scotland. Around 300 drawings and paintings have survived, each preserving a moment from Mendelssohn’s journeys and impressions. The composer’s talent knew no bounds: he could artistically capture both sights and sounds. Today, these works are partly on display in Leipzig and partly in Oxford.
