There is no consensus on how to perform the works of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, or Chopin. Some artists choose modern pianos, while others prefer historical instruments from the 18th or early 19th century for their performances. Nowadays, we often hear: “If Beethoven had known the modern piano, he would surely have liked it better than the fortepiano of his time…” Perhaps. What is certain, however, is that he would have written completely different music—music inspired by the sound and possibilities of the modern piano.
